Express buses are a highly convenient and budget-friendly way to travel between cities in Japan. However, if it’s your first time, you might wonder which seat to choose. Here is a guide to the features and benefits of different seating areas to help you find your ideal spot.
1. Seat Features by Location
Front Seats:
Easy to get on and off, which is perfect for quick transitions during breaks at Service Areas (SA). On daytime buses, you can enjoy a great view of the road ahead. Note: On overnight buses, curtains are usually drawn behind the driver, so there is no forward view. Also, these seats are closer to the front wheels, so you might feel more vibration.
Rear Seats:
A favorite among frequent night bus travelers. Since there is less foot traffic, it tends to be quieter. The last row is particularly popular because you can recline your seat fully without worrying about anyone behind you. Note: These seats are more prone to swaying, so if you get motion sickness easily, the front is a better choice.
Middle Seats:
Located away from the wheels, these seats offer the most stable ride with the least vibration. This is the best area for those concerned about motion sickness.
2. Window vs. Aisle Seats
Window Seats:
Ideal for enjoying the scenery and leaning against the window to sleep. You also won't be disturbed when the person next to you gets up. However, the space can feel a bit cramped, and you’ll need to ask your neighbor to move when you want to use the restroom.
Aisle Seats:
Offer more freedom of movement. You can stretch your legs slightly into the aisle and stand up whenever you like without bothering others. The downside is that you may have to wake up if the window-seat passenger needs to get out.
3. Pro Tip: Choose "3-Row Independent Seats" for Overnight Trips
If your bus offers a 3-row independent seating (3列独立シート) layout, we highly recommend it. Unlike the standard 4-row (2+2) layout, each seat is separated by an aisle. This provides maximum privacy and eliminates the need to worry about neighbors when getting up or reclining.
Important Note: Seat Selection
Please be aware that seat selection (座席指定) is only available on certain bus companies and routes.
・With Selection: You can pick your preferred seat during the booking process on the website. Look for the "Seat Selection" icon.
・Without Selection: The driver or staff will assign your seat upon boarding.
FAQ
Q. Which seat is better on a highway bus: window or aisle?
A. It depends on your travel style. A window seat is better if you want to sleep or lean against the wall, especially on overnight buses. An aisle seat is convenient if you want to stretch your legs or go to the restroom easily.
Q. Is it better to sit in the front or the back of a bus?
A. The front seats are usually more comfortable. Seats near the front of a highway bus tend to have less vibration and provide a smoother ride. However, the back seats may offer more privacy if the bus is not full.
Q. Which seat is best for sleeping on an overnight bus?
A. A window seat in the middle of the bus is often the best choice. This area usually experiences less movement compared to the back seats. Leaning against the window can also help you sleep more comfortably during a long overnight bus trip.
Q. Are some seats quieter on a highway bus?
A. Yes, seats toward the front are usually quieter. The back of the bus is closer to the engine and may feel bumpier or louder during the ride. If you want a calm trip, choose a seat closer to the front when making your reservation.
Q. Can I choose my seat when booking a highway bus?
A. Some highway buses allow seat selection during reservation. Depending on the bus company, you may be able to choose your seat when booking your ticket online. If seat selection is not available, the bus operator will assign your seat automatically.
