Kamikochi is a scenic highland valley in western Nagano Prefecture, nestled in the upper reaches of the Azusa River among the southern Hida Mountains.
It forms part of the Chūbu-Sangaku National Park and has been designated a National Cultural Asset (Special Place of Scenic Beauty / Special Natural Monument / Nature Conservation Area).
Elevation: approx. 1,500m
The name "Kamikochi" traces back to the legend that Hotakaminomikoto — the enshrined deity
of Hotaka Shrine — descended upon Mt. Hotaka and came to be venerated at this sacred site.
