Hakuba, located in Nagano’s Northern Alps, is a world-renowned mountain resort famous for its deep powder snow in winter, lush greenery in summer, and stunning alpine landscapes year-round. After enjoying skiing, snowboarding, hiking, or relaxing in this beautiful resort town, many travelers continue their journey to Japan’s capital.
The easiest and most affordable way to travel from Hakuba to Tokyo is by highway bus. Direct services operate from Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal and other key stops in the village to Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal (Busta Shinjuku) and other major hubs in Tokyo.
The ride takes about 5 to 5.5 hours, offering a smooth and direct journey without transfers. With fares usually around ¥5,500–¥7,000, buses are significantly cheaper than combining trains and Shinkansen. Comfortable reclining seats, luggage storage for ski and snowboard gear, and onboard amenities such as restrooms—and sometimes Wi-Fi or power outlets—make the trip convenient and relaxing.
Overnight buses are also available, allowing you to leave Hakuba late and arrive in Tokyo early in the morning, maximizing your time for sightseeing, shopping, or onward travel.
If the bus code starts with an X or a Z then you can make a booking from one month in advance. For all other buses, bookings can be made between 1 and 4 months before the intended departure date. We suggest that you visit our website closer to your desired departure date and make a booking then.
