Hakuba, located in the Northern Japanese Alps of Nagano Prefecture, is one of Japan’s most popular year-round mountain resorts. Renowned for its deep powder snow in winter, lush forests and rivers in summer, and panoramic views of the Northern Alps, Hakuba attracts skiers, hikers, and nature lovers from around the world.
Reaching Hakuba can be challenging by train, as multiple transfers are often required, and driving in winter can be difficult. The most convenient and affordable way is to take a Tokyo to Hakuba bus. Direct highway buses run from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal (Busta Shinjuku) and other major Tokyo hubs straight to Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal and nearby ski resorts.
The journey takes about 4.5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic and weather. Bus fares are usually much cheaper than taking the Shinkansen with local train transfers, making them a budget-friendly option for both solo travelers and groups. Onboard, you’ll find comfortable reclining seats, luggage space for ski and snowboard gear, and amenities such as restrooms—and some services even provide free Wi-Fi and power outlets.
Overnight buses are also available, allowing you to rest during the trip and arrive early in the morning, ready to maximize your time on Hakuba’s ski slopes or enjoy its beautiful alpine scenery.
If the bus code starts with an X or a Z then you can make a booking from one month in advance. For all other buses, bookings can be made between 1 and 4 months before the intended departure date. We suggest that you visit our website closer to your desired departure date and make a booking then.
